There are a number of methods to diffuse the scent through the air, each
with advantages and disadvantages. Aromatherapy diffusers are ‘powered’
by some combination of evaporation, air movement, heat and moisture to
carry the molecules of the aroma through the air.
Simple Evaporation Method Aromatherapy Diffusers
Technically, all aromatherapy diffusers rely on evaporation as a method
to spread your chosen scent. The most simple, however, rely purely on
evaporation.
Clay Pot Aromatherapy Diffusers
Decorative clay and terracotta pots are an inexpensive method of
diffusing scents into the air. Generally, the bottom half of the pot is
glazed to hold the aromatherapy oils. The top half is unglazed. You pour
an essential oil – or combination of oils – into the pot through an
opening at the top and cork it. The scent permeates the porous clay and
diffuses into the air. Clay pot aromatherapy diffusers are decorative
and inexpensive, but it’s difficult to regulate the concentration of
scent in the air.
Much of the aromatherapy jewelry on the market is of the clay pot
aromatherapy diffuser type.
Light Ring Aromatherapy Diffusers
Light ring aromatherapy diffusers are generally unglazed clay rings that
are meant to fit around the top of a light bulb. A small groove in the
surface of the ring holds the essential oil. The heat from the light
bulb hastens the evaporation of the essential oil, and diffuses its
molecules into the air. Light bulb rings have the same advantages and
disadvantages as clay pot aromatherapy diffusers. In addition, if you
get some of the essential oil on the light bulb itself, the glass may
break.
Candle Aromatherapy Diffusers
Many aromatherapy diffusers use a small candle beneath a bowl or chamber
that holds the essential oils. When the candle is lit, heat hastens the
evaporation of the essential oils and diffuses the molecules in the air.
Candle aromatherapy diffusers come in shapes, styles and colors to suit
nearly any décor. The major disadvantage cited by some experts is that
heat may destroy some of the molecules in the essential oil, making them
less effective for therapeutic purposes.
