Acne, Blackheads, and Boils

If you are having trouble with skin blemishes, essential oils can help.

If you have trouble with skin blemishes, such as acne, blackheads and boils, essential oils can be the answer you’re looking for.

The skin overproducing sebum causes acne. The cause of this overproduction is unknown, but diet, menstrual cycles, stress and cosmetic use appear to contribute to acne outbreaks. To get rid of acne, add a few drops of lavender, tea tree, or cajeput to a carrier oil and to a lanolin and fragrance-free cream or lotion. Massage the mixture regularly into the skin. If you have sensitive skin, be sure to dilute the essential oils first. Also, if your skin is inflamed by acne, don’t massage the skin when applying the mixture.

Blackheads are caused when the sebum combines with skin pigment and clogs the pores. Blackheads can be caused by heredity, stress, cosmetics, oily skin, and repeated rubbing or over washing of skin. To treat blackheads, give yourself a facial steam using several drops of lavender or eucalyptus. If the area is badly inflamed, however, do not use a steam treatment. This can actually make the condition worse.

Boils are the result of a bacterial infection. They are round and filled with puss. They usually heal within 10-25 days. The cause of boils varies, though the usual causes are a depressed immune system and poor nutrition. To treat boils, place ten drops of tea tree or lavender to bath water and soak for fifteen minutes. If a boil is exceptionally large or if it won’t go away, however, you should see a doctor for assistance.
