When it comes to taking care of skin and hair, essential oils are a must
have. From maintaining healthy skin and hair, to preventing wrinkles, to
alleviating troublesome skin and hair disorders, essential oils may hold
the key to beautiful skin and hair.
Different Skin Types
If you are one of the lucky few with normal skin, consider yourself
fortunate. Even if you have normal skin, it is important to take a
proactive approach to its maintenance. To maintain normal skin, combine
a few drops of lavender, rose, or chamomile with lanolin and a
fragrance-free lotion or cream. Gently massage this onto your face a few
times per week.
Of course, having normal skin is not, in fact, very normal. A more
common skin type is oily skin. Oily skin is caused by the skin’s
sebaceous glands overproducing oil. It results in shiny skin that feels
greasy. To help with oily skin, combine a few drops of lemon, rosemary,
or cedarwood with lanolin and a fragrance-free lotion or cream and
gently rub the mixture on your face. You can also add a few drops of
these essential oils to rosewater and use it as a toner.
On the other end of the spectrum, dry skin is caused by a deficiency in
oil production. This causes a lack of moisture, which can result in
cracking, flaking, and scaling of the skin. To treat dry skin, add rose,
sandalwood, or lavender to a carrier oil, such as grapeseed. Add this to
a lanolin and fragrance-free skin cream or lotion. Gently massage the
mixture into your skin a few times per week.
Combination skin is another common skin type. This skin type is the
result of two different skin types, such as dry skin and oily skin,
being present in the same area. On the face, for example, what is
referred to as a “T” zone often develops in combination skin. The “T”
zone is an area that goes across the forehead and down the nose to the
bottom of the chin. With combination skin, the “T” zone is of a
different skin type than the rest of the skin on the face. To combat
combination skin, mix a few drops of ylang ylang, chamomile, or lavender
to carrier oil. Put these in a lanolin and fragrance-free skin cream or
lotion and gently rub over your face.
