A human beings life is a roller coaster of emotions: love, anger, fear,
sadness, joy. These same emotions are at work everyday in the animal
world as well. You can help improve an animals overall well being, both
immediately and for the long term, through the use of aromatherapy.
There are several different potential stressors in an animal’s life,
including food that is unhealthy, being left alone for long periods of
time, a feeling of abandonment, and more. All of these things can lead
to excessive fatigue, shedding, panting, itching, and in some cases
aggression. There are so many different conditions that can be
effectively treated using aromatherapy, such as itchy skin, hot spots,
rashes, cuts, ear infections, scrapes, flatulence, stinky breath, and
just about anything else you can think of.
A dog is a lifelong companion. They are capable of bringing their owners
so much joy and affection, and are totally reliant on us for their
emotional well being. Dogs tend to have a real difficultly dealing with
emotional stress and loneliness, a problem that is compounded by the
fact that they can sense all of our moods and emotions. This means that
dogs will require greater love and attention than other animals.
Following are some good ideas for using aromatherapy with your dog.
Yeast or Ear Infections
The following oils are great to use with these types of infections. You
can put the oils into a spray bottle, wiping the mixture inside the ear
after it has been cleaned. Lavender will help to relive the itch and
sooth the skin, tea tree will act as a powerful antifungal and
antibacterial agent, Roman chamomile will help the tissue heal and sooth
the area, and bergamot contains antifungal properties.
Emotional Stress
Add the following essential oils into a base oil such as jojoba or sweet
almond: 6 drops of lavender, 1 drop of Neroli, and 4 drops of Marjoram.
This mixture should then be lightly applied to the head and spine. Feel
free to repeat the applications as needed.
Fleas and Ticks
The best essential oils to repel ticks are bay, lavender, myrrh, and
geranium. Fleas are usually repelled by lemon, citronella, peppermint,
and clary sage. You can keep fleas and ticks off your dog by mixing
15-20 drops of these essential oils into a base oil and then spraying
the mixture on your dog daily.
Nervousness and Hyperactivity
Apply the following essential oils to your dog’s head and spine after
combining them with a base oil: 6 drops of lavender, 4 drops of
petitgrain, and 2 drops of roman chamomile.
Anxiety and Loneliness
To help relieve the stresses of anxiety and loneliness combine 5 drops
of cypress and marjoram with 1 drop of Rose otto in a carrier oil. The
mixture should then be applied to the head and spine, repeating as
needed.
When using essential oils with your dog be sure to keep in mind that
their sense of smell is very powerful. You always want to use small
amounts, and apply the oil mixtures slowly. When a dog is exposed to
overwhelming smells they may pace, wine, or rub their head on the
ground.
