Essential Oils for Your Pets

You can help improve an animals overall well being, both immediately and for the long term, through the use of aromatherapy.


A human beings life is a roller coaster of emotions: love, anger, fear, sadness, joy. These same emotions are at work everyday in the animal world as well. You can help improve an animals overall well being, both immediately and for the long term, through the use of aromatherapy.

There are several different potential stressors in an animal’s life, including food that is unhealthy, being left alone for long periods of time, a feeling of abandonment, and more. All of these things can lead to excessive fatigue, shedding, panting, itching, and in some cases aggression. There are so many different conditions that can be effectively treated using aromatherapy, such as itchy skin, hot spots, rashes, cuts, ear infections, scrapes, flatulence, stinky breath, and just about anything else you can think of.

A dog is a lifelong companion. They are capable of bringing their owners so much joy and affection, and are totally reliant on us for their emotional well being. Dogs tend to have a real difficultly dealing with emotional stress and loneliness, a problem that is compounded by the fact that they can sense all of our moods and emotions. This means that dogs will require greater love and attention than other animals.

Following are some good ideas for using aromatherapy with your dog.

Yeast or Ear Infections
The following oils are great to use with these types of infections. You can put the oils into a spray bottle, wiping the mixture inside the ear after it has been cleaned. Lavender will help to relive the itch and sooth the skin, tea tree will act as a powerful antifungal and antibacterial agent, Roman chamomile will help the tissue heal and sooth the area, and bergamot contains antifungal properties.

Emotional Stress
Add the following essential oils into a base oil such as jojoba or sweet almond: 6 drops of lavender, 1 drop of Neroli, and 4 drops of Marjoram. This mixture should then be lightly applied to the head and spine. Feel free to repeat the applications as needed.

Fleas and Ticks
The best essential oils to repel ticks are bay, lavender, myrrh, and geranium. Fleas are usually repelled by lemon, citronella, peppermint, and clary sage. You can keep fleas and ticks off your dog by mixing 15-20 drops of these essential oils into a base oil and then spraying the mixture on your dog daily.

Nervousness and Hyperactivity
Apply the following essential oils to your dog’s head and spine after combining them with a base oil: 6 drops of lavender, 4 drops of petitgrain, and 2 drops of roman chamomile.

Anxiety and Loneliness
To help relieve the stresses of anxiety and loneliness combine 5 drops of cypress and marjoram with 1 drop of Rose otto in a carrier oil. The mixture should then be applied to the head and spine, repeating as needed.

When using essential oils with your dog be sure to keep in mind that their sense of smell is very powerful. You always want to use small amounts, and apply the oil mixtures slowly. When a dog is exposed to overwhelming smells they may pace, wine, or rub their head on the ground.
