Aromatherapy and Allergies

While some essential oils can help allergies, others can actually cause allergic reactions..

Allergies are a reaction that our body produces to other substances that are normally not seen as harmful. Symptoms of allergies are sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, runny nose, congestion, rashes, blisters and swelling. There are many causes for allergies, and plenty of medications, sold both over the counter and by prescription, to help ease the symptoms of allergies.

There are many substances that can cause allergies as well, and they include chemicals, food, medications, detergents, pollen, additives, grass, perfumes, dust, pollution, mold and soap, to name a few.

Aromatherapy can also be used to help curb the symptoms of allergies. The most commonly used essential oils for treatment of allergies are Chamomile, Lavender, Geranium, Tea Tree, Lemon, Myrrh, Ylang Ylang and Melissa.

It is important though to realize that some aromatherapy essential oils will also upset your allergies and could cause allergic symptoms to arise. There are also people who have an allergy to many of the essential oils themselves. Take caution when entering the world of aromatherapy to know what the essential oils are for, what they help, and what they may hinder. Some aromatherapy essential oils can cause skin irritation when used in a carrier oil as a massage oil.

Allergy takes on a lot of different symptoms, and can cause severe and even fatal reactions. Severe allergies can cause Anaphylactic shock, which unless treated immediately is almost always fatal. Anaphylactic shock is when the larynx swells and air can not pass through, thusly killing you through suffocation. The most common severe allergies are from foods, insect bites and swallowing or injecting medicine.

Aromatherapy essential oils can, however, help to treat skin allergies considerably more quickly than modern medicine in some places. Because essential oils are rubbed in to the skin that is affected, the aromatherapy directly helps the irritated allergic skin reaction.
